Overview

Madrid Chamartín-Clara Campoamor Station, inaugurated in 1967, stands as the city's second major railway terminal, strategically located in the northern district of Chamartín. Originally designed to alleviate congestion from Atocha Station, Chamartín has evolved into a critical nexus for Spain's rail network, connecting the capital with the northwest regions and serving as a hub for high-speed (AVE), regional, and commuter (Cercanías) trains.

Historical Significance

The station's construction began in the early 1960s, culminating in its opening in 1967. Over the decades, Chamartín has undergone several expansions to accommodate increasing passenger demand and the introduction of high-speed rail services. In December 2020, it was officially renamed Chamartín-Clara Campoamor, honoring the Spanish politician and women's rights advocate.

Current Redevelopment Project

The station is undergoing a comprehensive transformation aimed at enhancing capacity, accessibility, and integration with the city's urban fabric. Key aspects of the project include:
  • Expansion of High-Speed Rail Capacity: Addition of new tracks and platforms to accommodate increased AVE services.
  • Modernization of Facilities: Upgrades to passenger areas, including expanded concourses, improved signage, and enhanced accessibility features.
  • Integration with Madrid Nuevo Norte: The redevelopment aligns with the broader Madrid Nuevo Norte urban project, aiming to create a sustainable and connected urban environment.
  • Sustainable Design: Incorporation of eco-friendly materials and energy-efficient systems to reduce the station's environmental footprint.

Architectural Vision

The redesign, led by UNStudio and b720 Arquitectura, envisions Chamartín as an "open ecosystem" that seamlessly blends transportation infrastructure with public spaces. The design preserves the station's iconic vaulted roofs while introducing new urban terraces and green areas, fostering community interaction and connectivity.

Connectivity and Services

  • Rail Services: Chamartín serves as a hub for various rail services, including:
    • High-Speed (AVE): Connections to cities like Segovia, Valladolid, and León.
    • Regional and Long-Distance: Routes to northern and northwestern Spain.
    • Cercanías (Commuter Rail): Lines C-1 through C-10, facilitating suburban connectivity.
  • Metro Access: The station integrates with Madrid Metro Lines 1 and 10, providing direct access to various city districts.
  • Bus and Taxi Services: Enhanced bus terminals and taxi stands improve last-mile connectivity for passengers.

Future Outlook

Upon completion, the revamped Chamartín-Clara Campoamor Station is poised to become a model for sustainable and integrated urban transport hubs in Europe. The project not only addresses current transportation needs but also anticipates future growth, positioning Madrid as a leader in modern urban mobility.
