[MADRID] Puerta de Alcalá | Madrid’s Iconic City Arch (1778)

One of Madrid’s most iconic landmarks, Puerta de Alcalá is a monumental neoclassical arch located at Plaza de la Independencia, near Retiro Park. Commissioned by King Charles III and designed by Italian architect Francesco Sabatini, it was completed in 1778 as a grand entrance to the city from the east.

Built from granite and limestone, the arch features five openings, sculptural reliefs, and classical proportions, making it an early example of neoclassicism in Spain. It predated Paris’s Arc de Triomphe and Berlin’s Brandenburg Gate, highlighting Madrid’s ambitions during the Bourbon reforms.

Today, Puerta de Alcalá stands not only as a historic gate, but also as a symbol of the city — frequently used in civic celebrations, tourism, and cultural memory.
