Overview
The Sagrera Railway Station project is one of Barcelona's most ambitious urban regeneration initiatives. With an estimated investment of €2 billion, the project aims to create a major intermodal transport hub that integrates high-speed rail, commuter trains, metro lines, and bus services. Beyond transportation, the development includes extensive urban redevelopment with green spaces, residential areas, and commercial zones, transforming the city's northeastern districts.Key Features
- Intermodal Transport Hub: The station will serve as a central node for various transportation modes, including high-speed trains (AVE), regional and commuter trains, metro lines 4 and 9/10, and bus services. The facility is designed to handle up to 100 million passengers annually, making it one of Europe's largest transport hubs.
- Integrated Urban Park: A 3.7-kilometer-long linear park will be constructed above the underground rail corridor, providing green space that connects previously divided neighborhoods and offers recreational areas for residents.
- Urban Redevelopment: The project encompasses the revitalization of surrounding areas, including the construction of 15,000 new homes, with a significant portion designated as affordable housing. Additionally, 500,000 square meters will be allocated for commercial and tertiary sector activities, fostering economic growth.
Timeline
2009–2010 – Project LaunchThe project was officially launched in 2010, with the first phase of excavation and planning initiated. Early enthusiasm surrounded the transformation of La Sagrera into a major intermodal hub.
2014–2018 – Construction Suspension
In early 2014, the works were halted due to a corruption investigation involving construction contracts. The project remained dormant until reactivation in 2018, following revised oversight and financing strategies.
2019–2023 – Major Structural Works
By 2022, around 60% of the structural work had been completed. This included significant progress on underground tracks, platforms, and the main station structure. In 2023, the station's distinctive roof and passenger circulation levels were under active development.
2024 – Infrastructure Testing
In August 2024, Adif began high-speed rail trials through the station, marking a major milestone. While trains did not stop at the station yet, this phase ensured all systems—tracks, power, signaling—were calibrated and tested under real conditions.
2025 – Interior Construction and Urban Integration
As of May 2025, construction is focused on completing interiors, installing systems for ticketing, passenger flow, and safety, and integrating the station with metro lines and bus services. At the same time, surrounding developments, including residential blocks and the 3.7 km linear park above the rail corridor, are progressing in parallel.
2026 – Project Completion and Full Operation
Final handover and operational launch are expected in 2026. Sagrera will become Barcelona’s second major transport hub, fully integrated with AVE high-speed rail, Rodalies commuter trains, Metro L4 and L9/10, and long-distance bus services. The surrounding regenerated neighborhoods and public spaces will also open progressively during this year.
