Overview

Barcelona's Montjuïc Exhibition Center, a historic venue from the 1929 International Exposition, is undergoing a significant transformation. With an investment of €290 million, the project aims to modernize the exhibition halls, enhance sustainability, and integrate the venue more seamlessly into the city's urban fabric. The renovation is scheduled for completion by 2029, coinciding with the centenary of the original exposition.

Key Projects

1. Multifunctional Hall – “2029 Artefacto”
Architects: Smiljan Radić, Miquel Mariné Núñez, Beatriz Borque, César Rueda Bonet
This project involves constructing a new multifunctional hall with 20,500 m² of exhibition space. The design emphasizes transparency and integration with the urban environment, featuring a lightweight metal structure and a landscaped walkway connecting the buildings.

2. New Congress Center – “Umbracle”
Architects: Forgas Arquitectes, Arquitectura Sideral, Álvaro Fernández García
Located in the historic Alfonso XIII Pavilion, this project will create a new congress center while preserving the building's listed façade. The design includes a covered courtyard with vaults inspired by Guastavino's architecture, providing a harmonious blend of historical preservation and modern functionality.

3. Fira Barcelona Innovation Hub – “L’Avantsala de la Fira”
Architects: Bjarke Ingels Group (BIG), MIAS Arquitectura
This initiative transforms the Palau del Vestit into an innovation hub, offering flexible spaces, a 200-seat auditorium, and a new façade on Gran Vía. The hub aims to foster collaboration among startups, SMEs, and research institutions in sectors like smart cities and technology.

Urban Integration and Community Development

Beyond architectural enhancements, the renovation plan includes significant urban development:

  • Pedestrianization of Avinguda Maria Cristina: Transforming this avenue into a pedestrian-friendly space to improve connectivity between Plaça d'Espanya and Montjuïc.
  • New Residential Neighborhood – Nou Poble Sec: Development of 500 rent-controlled housing units, a municipal sports center, and a primary healthcare facility to rejuvenate the surrounding area.
  • Enhanced Public Transport: Plans to extend Metro Line 2 to improve access to Montjuïc and its facilities.

Timeline

  • 2024: International architectural competition launched; winning designs selected.
  • 2025: Detailed planning and preparation for construction phases.
  • 2026–2029: Construction of new facilities and renovation of existing structures.
  • 2029: Completion of the renovation, aligning with the centenary of the 1929 International Exposition.

Impact

The Montjuïc Exhibition Center's transformation is poised to reinforce Barcelona's status as a global hub for trade fairs and cultural events. By blending historical preservation with modern design and community-focused development, the project exemplifies sustainable urban renewal.
